The egg producers made undue profits during the period the interim injunction !

The state requested the Court of Appeal yesterday (06th) to make an order subject to legal costs from the Egg Producers’ Association, which had filed a lawsuit challenging the Gazette aimed at controlling egg prices and thereafter withdrawing the same.

The case was filed in order to prevent the Consumer Affairs Authority from fulfilling the duties assigned to them. However, the Egg Producers Association later withdrew the case.

The Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardene PC made this request yesterday (June 6) when the petitioner withdrew the petition challenging the gazette notice issued by the Sri Lanka Consumer Affairs Authority setting a maximum retail price for the sale of eggs.

Court of Appeal Judge Khema Swarnadhiphi ordered the request of the Additional Solicitor General to be filed before the court in writing and ordered to call the case on March 31 to consider the request.

Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena also pointed out to the court that during the short period when the court imposed an interim injunction preventing the implementation of the price control gazette at the request of the petitioners, the egg producers sold more than 20 million eggs at higher prices and earned a huge amount of undue profit.
