The Sri Lankan Students’ Union in the United States said in a statement that the protests were aimed at supporting active protests in Sri Lanka as well as raising awareness about the situation in Sri Lanka in the United States.  It will also address the issue of non-partisan political change in Sri Lanka, as well as support fundraising efforts by Sri Lankans abroad to supply essential medicines to Sri Lanka.

Simultaneously, a programme was launched to brief the State Secretaries, senators and members of Congress on the situation in Sri Lanka as well as the activities of the Rajapaksa family.

Accordingly, the protesters demanded an investigation into the alleged purchase of property in the United States by the members and allies of the Rajapaksa family.
