Gobinath Sivarajah, media manager of the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee, was arrested by immigration and emigration department officials at the airport early today (27) while attempting to flee the country despite an existing foreign travel ban. He was apprehended by the immigration officials of BIA and handed over to Aor Port Police. Later he was handed over Colombo fraud Investogation unit. They produced Sivarajah before the Colombo Chief Magistrate and remanded till 05th June.
Gobinath Sivarajah is the main suspect in a fraud case related to the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee, which is currently under investigation.
It was reported that Gobinath, who is under investigation for fraud and corruption, was stopped at the Bandaranaike International Airport while attempting to travel to Europe with another Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee member. Despite being the media manager of the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee, Sivarajah has also worked in two controversial sports bodies, Techball (Project Manager) and Dance Sport (Secretary), both of which were recently banned. Another document created by his colleagues, a sports club called Winter Sports, was similarly banned.
The controversy surrounding these non-existent paper-only sporting bodies involves officials of the corrupt Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee conspiring to form such associations and extort money from international parent bodies and local sponsors.
Critics point out that the arrest of Sivarajah, a well-known IT expert, who provided significant support to Maxwell de Silva, reveals hidden information about many crimes. Along with Gobinath’s detention, several other officials of the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee, who have enjoyed freedom for years, are also reported to be losing their freedom
