Sources of the Railway Department said that 44 trains have been canceled due to the retirement of more than 500 staff members of the Railway Department from today (31) according to government retirement policy.
It was reported that there were many people among these retired people there are directly involved in the running of the railways.
According to the sources, 12 trains on the coastal line, 23 on the main line, 7 on the Puttalam line, and 2 on the Kelani valley line.
It is also reported that even though the management has notified to retain the essential employees on a contract basis, due to non-payment of contract workers currently employed, newly retired employees have turned down the request made by the department.
