Public lavatories blamed for Colombo North Covid spread

An investigation has revealed that the majority of cases of Covid patients reported from the Colombo District are due to the habit of using water taps, public lavatories and baths close to public housing complexes in the Colombo North area. 

As of Friday (20), out of the 15 324 reported in the second wave of Covid, 12 265 were associated with the Peliyagoda fish market, the highest number reported from Colombo North.

The Colombo North area including Modara, Kotahena, Mattakkuliya, Dematagoda and the Foreshore areas has a population of 130 000 persons. Of the Covid cases reported, 388 were reported in Mattakkuliya, 327 in Modara, 288 in Dematagoda, 204 in Wanathamulla, 230 in Slave Island, 255 in Ginthupitiya, 295 in Kotahena and 205 in Bloemendal.
