A police sergeant from Dangovita Police Station has been suspended for his involvement in releasing a vehicle with fake number plates and documents. The incident unfolded when the sergeant and a police constable observed a suspicious rear number plate on a car traveling from Warakapola to Colombo in the Helagala area.
Upon further investigation, a female sergeant on duty confirmed that the documents of the vehicle were entirely fake. In the course of the examination, the Maradana Police Station Commander contacted the investigating sergeant via phone, instructing them to release the driver despite the fraudulent documents.
Despite the confirmation of fake revenue license and insurance certificate, the sergeant proceeded to release the vehicle based on the Maradana Police Station Commander’s orders. However, the sergeant has documented photocopies and originals of the car’s smoke certificate and registration book.
The police sergeant, accused of serious dereliction of duty, has now been suspended pending further investigation.
