Police and military  did a splendid job to identify fugitives after hospital authorities refused access to the CCTV footage

Police and Military intelligence did a splendid job to track down fugitive criminals after the Gampaha Hospital Director denied Police access to the hospital CCTV camera system.

According to reports two men had tried to admit a girl who had been beaten to death, claiming she was in critical condition.

The victim is from Bemmulla in Gampaha.

The intelligence sleuths averted a complicated situation that would have arisen due to the Gampaha hospital authorities refusing the hospital police to examine the CCTV camera system.

Hospital Director Saman Pathirana gave many excuses not to allow the Police to examine the CCTV footage.

Reports indicate two vehicles entered the hospital on the 10th at 7:05 a.m. and 7:06 a.m. Due to the distressing circumstances, the hospital security section has been unable to determine which vehicle brought the girl.

The girl was not known to be dead but was believed to be in critical condition. She was immediately referred to the OPD doctor. When it was confirmed that she had been severely beaten and died, hospital staff were shocked as well. The young man who brought her to the hospital had in the meantime fled the hospital premises.

The hospital police then requested the hospital director for permission to check the CCTV footage by 7.30 am in order to get the correct information quickly. However, the hospital’s director said that he would not allow anyone to check the CCTV. He said that if it was possible, try and get the Assistant Superintendent of Police to contact him about the matter.

He has reportedly asked, “What did those who were there do until a dead body was admitted to the hospital?”

In this regard, the deputy director of the hospital has also been informed. However, he said that since the hospital director had not been there, he could only allow an inspection of the CCTV video after obtaining a court order.

Meanwhile, the relevant information has been conveyed to all higher officials by the hospital police. The hospital director has been asked to provide this information on three occasions, but he has avoided the request by presenting various issues.

At the same time, the STF, military and police intelligence units came and obtained information about the two suspicious vehicles from the motor vehicle registration department. They started investigations based on that information.

Though the director of the Gampaha hospital did not allow the police to check the CCTV footage of the hospital, the CCTV footage of the institutions in front of the hospital and Nawaloka Hospital had allowed the police to examine their CCTV system.

The intelligence agencies have been able to identify the suspect through that information. Despite the lapse of time, police were able to find the suspect, the girl who died, and all her details before two hours had elapsed from the investigation. This is when the suspects were arrested.

Since the problem has been resolved, the hospital police have not complained to anyone regarding the conduct of hospital director Saman Pathirana.
