There are 873 pregnant mothers who are malnourished and underweight in the Colombo district, according to a survey conducted by the Health authorities.
This survey was conducted among mothers visiting clinics conducted by the medical officers of health in the Colombo division.
A spokesperson of the Director of Health Services stated that due to pregnant mothers not being of proper weight, the children born to those mothers will not be in proper health and those children also will face various health issues from their infancy
However, in order to maintain the nutritional levels of these mothers reasonably well, the Red Cross Organization and the Director of Health Services Colombo are currently working to provide a food pack with necessary nutrition and encourage people to help in this endeavour by making contributions to this cause.
A spokesman said that more information could be obtained by contacting the Director of Health Services office in Colombo.
