The Sri Lanka Navy successfully intervened and rescued a fisherman who suddenly fell seriously ill while on board a multi-day fishing cruise that set sail last Saturday (31), responding to an emergency call from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
The fishing vessel ‘Varshan Son 03’, carrying a crew of five members, had departed from Kalamatia fishing port for their fishing activities when the medical emergency occurred. Upon being alerted about the situation, the Colombo Marine Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) at the Naval Headquarters promptly coordinated the rescue operation.
The Navy directed their P 475 speed attack vessel, attached to the Southern Naval Command, to the location of the distressed fishing vessel. Despite facing rough seas, the Navy managed to transfer the sick fisherman safely to the speed attack vessel.
The Navy provided essential first aid to the patient on board the ship, and upon reaching Hambantota yesterday (01), the patient was immediately taken to the Hambantota District General Hospital for further medical treatment.
