Ministry calls clarifications from the Police on the controversial ride in Kalpitiya

The Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security has called for a report from the IGP regarding the controversial motorbike and luxury vehicle ride organized under police protection that led to public angerr in kalpitiya yesterday.

Organized by a private riding club called the Spin Rider Club, the Ministry has observed that most of the motorcycles on the tour were unregistered motorcycles.

Police say that about 100 motorcycles have been seized by the police in recent raids and court action has been taken against them.

The motorcyclists had called the police and inquired as to why there was no law in force regarding their motorcycles yesterday.

However, the Police Media Unit issued a statement today stating that this group has been involving in a CSR work in Kalpitiya and that permission has been granted by the police for this tour which is a part of this CSR project in accordance with the conditions of the government.

Following a donation made to the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, a condition was granted to travel legally from Mirigama to Anuradhapura via Kalpitiya for the motorcycle ride on 20.03.13 and 20.03.12020 in parallel to a school books distribution program for school children in the Kalpitiya area, The police media unit said.

The Police Media Unit has emphasized that the motorcycle ride was organized for a social cause.

However, the police announced that they had stopped the journey from Kalpitiya to Anuradhapura due to public outcry and violating the conditions.

The statement said that if the persons involved in the trip had acted illegally, legal action would be taken against them.
