A group of employees at a private leasing firm has assaulted and killed the President of the Self Employed Threewheeler Association of Sri Lanka, Sunil Jayawardena (52) on the premises of the leasing company yesterday.

The incident had occurred at the premises of the Chanmil Investment, a private leasing company in Nugegoda. According to sources Jayawardena and an association member had visited the company yesterday morning (10) to request for relief on behalf of another after his three-wheeler was taken away due to him missing leasing payments.

Jayawardena had gone to assure that his association will be held liable for the payments and to release the three-wheeler to its owner. The owner had been unable to make payments due to the lack of work during the Covid 19 pandemic. He had not paid in the leasing payments from January and had been unable to make a living after his three-wheeler had been taken away.

However, following an argument, the employees had attacked Jayawardena and had even used iron rods to beat him. The Police later admitted him to the Kalubowila hospital but Jayawardena later died due to his injuries. Police have arrested eight people involved in the incident.
