High level attempt to release 50 containers of banned Agro chemicals

The Controller of Imports and Exports has instructed to release a stock of imported chemical fertilizers which could not be released from the Port of Colombo due to the ban on the import of chemical fertilizers, based on Customs Department sources Lankadeepa reports.

As a result of the ban imposed by the government at the end of last April, nearly 50 containers of chemicals containing tens of millions of rupees were stranded at the port and the Customs said that the containers would be released in the next few days with the instructions of the Controller of Imports and Exports.

With the government’s decision to ban the import of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, the revocation of all licenses issued for the import of chemicals could not free the stock of chemicals.

The Department of Import and Export Control also issued a gazette notification on the 6th to allow the import of chemicals for non-agricultural industries with the prior approval of the relevant authorities.
