Govt. Is Responsible As It Underestimated The Covid Risk: JVP

The government should take the responsibility for the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic because they had let their guard down, JVP propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said.

He told a news conference yesterday (14) that the government was acting in a way that the epidemic had been completely wiped out.

“The government put in place various strategies to prevent COVID-19 pandemic that was drastically spreading in March. However, it was acting in a way that the pandemic had been wiped out recently. Actually, the risk was not wiped out. The government gave up all the measures to control it. That is why the second wave emerged.” the MP said.

He said even the head of the COVID-19 prevention Unit had admitted that all sectors had overestimated the efforts on controlling it.

“Even the media started to publish that Sri Lanka had become the second country to control COVID-19. We had to face the second wave soon after boasting about being the second country to control it proving that we were of overestimating. The situation is even worse now,” he said.

He said the government and government media were trying to attack the Brandix worker for spreading the disease and pass the buck to her and getaway.

“The health authorities have proved that she was not the first infected worker in the factory,” he said. Herath said the government should take immediate steps to ensure the safety of people as there was a risk of another cluster emerging at any point in the country.

“The government should mediate to support people affected due to the new situation. The serious issue that the people in Gampaha district have faced is that it takes three to four days to get reports of PCR tests. The process to perform PCR tests and issuing reports also should be expedited,” he said.
