Government to do away with the clause to bar dual citizens from entering Parliament?

The Cabinet is likely to do away with the clause prohibiting dual citizens from entering Parliament when they meet to discuss the 21st amendment to the constitution. The discussion is to take place today.

A group of SLPP members loyal to Basil Rajapaksa met with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister Wijedasa Rajapksa for an animated discussion on the 21st amendment. They pointed out that if the government resolves to introduce the clause to bar dual citizens from entering Parliament, it keeps Basil Rajapaksa at bay.

They also said that if the said clause comes into effect, it may create a division among the government benches.

The members opined it would not be suitable to bring in such a provision halfway through the government’s term and suggested putting it off until a new government assumes office after another two years.

However, all the other parties expressed their unstinted cooperation toward implementing this clause to remove dual citizens from Parliament. The other key issues the government was planning to discuss were increasing electricity tariffs and acquiring bare land owned by the government for cultivation.
