The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today began hearing the case against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, charged with misusing state funds, as United National Party (UNP) supporters gathered outside in protest. Among them was “Darme Uncle,” regarded as one of the most loyal UNPers, whose presence underscored the party’s steadfast support for its leader.
Wickremesinghe, 76, was detained on August 22 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly misusing LKR 16.6 million (approximately $55,000) in state funds for a September 2023 trip to London, linked to a university ceremony for his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe. The UNP maintains the trip was partly official, with personal expenses covered. The former president is currently in the Colombo National Hospital’s ICU, receiving treatment for dehydration, high blood pressure, and diabetes complications, raising uncertainty about his court appearance.
Outside the court, UNP supporters rallied, chanting slogans and waving party flags, condemning the case as a political move by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s National People’s Power (NPP) government. Darme Uncle, a long-time figure at the UNP’s Sirikotha headquarters, stood out as one of the most loyal UNPers, known for his dedication to the party over decades. His presence at the protest highlighted the UNP’s resolve, drawing attention from supporters and onlookers.
The case has divided public opinion. Wickremesinghe’s presidency, which secured a $2.9 billion IMF bailout, stabilized the economy but faced criticism for austerity measures, contributing to his 2024 election loss to Dissanayake. Opposition leaders, including Sajith Premadasa and Maithripala Sirisena, who visited Wickremesinghe in the hospital, have called the case “politically motivated.” Former Foreign Minister Ali Sabry warned it sets a “concerning precedent.”
As the hearing continues, Darme Uncle’s loyalty remains a symbol of the UNP’s commitment to Wickremesinghe, fueling national debate over the case’s implications.
