Professor Chandima Jeevandara, Director of Allergy and Immunology at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura’s Biosciences, recently voiced concerns about the potential presence of the Omicron JN.1 variant in the country. While there is no definitive scientific confirmation, Prof. Jeevandara speculates, based on global conditions, including the situation in India, that the influenza-like illnesses currently prevalent may be linked to the Covid-19 Omicron JN.1 variant.

Two days ago, Prof. Jeevandara took to social media platform Twitter, urging caution. In a note posted on X (Former Twitter), he recommended that individuals frequenting crowded and poorly ventilated places, as well as those who are immunocompromised and adults, should wear face masks as a preventive measure. The speculation about the potential presence of the Omicron JN.1 variant raises concerns about the need for continued vigilance and adherence to safety measures in the face of evolving viral threats.

As authorities investigate further and the medical community monitors the situation closely, the community is reminded of the importance of adhering to public health guidelines to mitigate the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
