A luxury bus driver who was transporting “ice” (crystal methamphetamine) concealed inside his stomach has died after one of the drug packets burst, causing fatal poisoning.
The deceased was a 55-year-old driver from Okewela who operated a luxury bus on the Tangalle–Makumbura route of the Southern Expressway in Sri Lanka.
The driver suddenly fell seriously ill shortly after the bus, which had travelled from Makumbura to Tangalle, reached its destination on June 8.
He was immediately admitted to the Tangalle Base Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his condition.
A post-mortem examination conducted at Tangalle Hospital on June 9 revealed two packets containing narcotics inside the deceased’s stomach.
Medical examinations confirmed that the cause of death was poisoning after one of the drug packets ruptured, allowing the narcotics to enter his bloodstream.
