The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has strongly asserted that extrajudicial killings are not a viable solution to addressing rising crime rates and emphasized that the rule of law is the most effective means to combat criminal activity.
In a statement issued yesterday, the BASL urged Acting Inspector General of Police to launch an impartial investigation into the recent deaths of two suspects while in police custody and the killing of another individual inside a courtroom. The association stressed the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future and holding accountable those responsible for custodial deaths and extrajudicial killings.
On February 21, two individuals in police custody were fatally shot, reportedly during an altercation. Authorities allege the suspects were involved in a murder that took place in Kotahena earlier that night.
Expressing concern over recurring instances of such killings, the BASL highlighted that previous cases had not been thoroughly investigated, leading to accusations of state impunity. The failure to take meaningful action, the statement noted, has severely undermined public trust in the justice system.
Signed by BASL President Anura Meddegoda, PC, and Secretary Chathura Galhena, the statement reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ensuring accountability and eradicating the culture of extrajudicial violence within law enforcement.
