Vavuniya High Court Judge M. Ilanchelian yesterday (25) refused to grant bail to the seven suspects who have been in prison for a year in connection with an incident where a birthday party was being held in Thonikkaal area of Vavuniya.

A birthday party was held on 23-07-2023 in the house where the incident took place and seven people have been arrested for the murder of the married couple who participated in it.

It was revealed during the police investigation that the woman of the couple who had participated in the birthday party was killed on a contract given by a garama niladhari to take revenge on her because she had an affair with him before that and married someone else.

Sugandan and Fatima Sasima, a 35-year-old married couple residing in Vavuniya Omanta area, died in that incident.

The seven suspects involved in the double murder have been in remand prison for a year and have been presented to the Vavuniya District Court and the High Court on 9 occasions, but they have not been granted bail.

Referring to that, a petition was filed at the Vavuniya High Court on behalf of the suspects and when the petition was considered, the government lawyer Arumugam Dhanusan and the police officer of the Special Criminal Investigation Division spoke against the granting of bail, so the Vavuniya High Court judge refused to grant bail to the suspects and issued an order to extend their remand period.

Accordingly, the remand period of the first and seventh defendants was extended to November 1st while remaining five was extended to February 25th.
