Angelo Mathews Frustrated

Veteran Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has expressed his frustration over the national team’s meagre Test cricket schedule, highlighting the concerning lack of opportunities to play the longest format. Taking to social media, Mathews tweeted:

“Absolutely shocking to hear that Sri Lanka is only playing 4 Test matches this entire year, including the Aus tests this month @ICC.”

Troubling Signs for Test Cricket in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s Test schedule paints a grim picture for the future of the format outside the dominant cricketing nations of India, Australia, and England. The 2025 calendar begins with a two-Test series against Australia but is followed by a lengthy five-month gap before another two-Test series against Bangladesh. Beyond this, there is a 12-month break before Sri Lanka’s next scheduled Test match in mid-2026—a concerning gap that could hinder player development and team cohesion.

A Bleak Outlook for 2026

The year 2026 offers little consolation, with Sri Lanka playing just six Tests across the entire year. This includes two-match series against the West Indies in June, India in August, and Pakistan between October and November. The stark contrast to the packed schedules of cricket’s powerhouses underscores the growing disparity in opportunities to play Test cricket.
