The Department of Wildlife Conservation has launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media, which shows a confrontation between a leopard and a dog. The leopard in the video is “Neluma,” known as the largest leopard in the National Park. The dog involved, after battling with Neluma, manages to escape with its life, though it is visibly injured by the end of the video.
In the footage, Neluma is seen attempting to capture the dog, and the two animals engage in a brief struggle. Ultimately, the dog breaks free and runs away. This video was recorded by a group of local tourists.

Early Hours
The incident occurred on January 29th, around 2:00 PM. According to witnesses, the dog was located approximately 15 kilometers from the Hunuwilagama entrance to Wilpattu National Park. This area is far from any human settlements, and the closest agricultural fields are still a considerable distance away. This raises questions about how the dog ended up so deep within the wilderness. Some argue that it is unlikely for a dog to have ventured so far into the forest, which has led to speculation.
However, a key point is that if a dog of this nature exists, it would need to be familiar with the forest environment. Such a dog should have knowledge of the area similar to that of wild animals. If the dog was simply strolling along a village road, it would not be surprising if it wandered into the forest.
Denial
Despite these questions, safari guides are strongly denying this possibility. However, anyone observing the footage with an open mind would likely understand what happened. The dog appears to have been startled and confused, suggesting it was acting purely out of instinct to protect itself.
A closer look at the video reveals that it was likely staged with careful planning, possibly for dramatic effect. The angle at which the video was filmed shows a deliberate attempt to capture the moment of the struggle. The safari jeep behind the scene appears to have stopped, ensuring the event could be recorded in the most dramatic way possible.
As the incident unfolds, the leopard suffers injuries and retreats, while the injured dog remains in distress. The Department of Wildlife Conservation is conducting a thorough and impartial investigation, and we hope it will reveal any possible wrongdoing. If anyone intentionally brought the dog into the forest to provoke the leopard, this should be fully investigated by wildlife officials. Additionally, the role of the safari drivers and guides involved must be questioned.
Minister of Wildlife Conservation, Anton Jayakodi, has confirmed that an investigation is underway. The Department of Wildlife Conservation is also looking into how the dog entered the park and whether there was any misconduct involved in this incident.
Ultimately, we believe that cruelty of this nature should never be tolerated. It is crucial that we prevent any further instances of such behavior, ensuring the safety and respect of both wildlife and domestic animals.
