A disturbing incident unfolded in Minneriya, Giritale area as a 17-year-old girl was shot last night (14), sustaining serious injuries. The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was rushed to Polonnaruwa Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The shooting occurred between 8:30 and 8:45 PM, according to Minneriya Police, who are currently investigating the incident. Initial reports suggest that the girl was targeted while visiting a neighbor’s house for New Year’s Eve festivities.
The victim’s mother revealed that the girl was shot in the neck area as she emerged from the neighbor’s house, clutching her mobile phone. The mother, suspects that the attack may be linked to a conflict arising from a love relationship the girl allegedly had.
As the girl’s condition worsened, she was transferred from Polonnaruwa General Hospital to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for specialized treatment. Authorities have identified the suspect as a 40-year-old resident of Jayantipura area, who has since fled the scene.
In response, Minneriya Police have initiated a special operation to apprehend the suspect.
