‘Get ready for a referendum’ – Govt. tells Election Commission

The government is said to have instructed the Elections Commission (EC) to prepare for a referendum if necessary, EC sources told Lankasara.

While the petitions against the proposed 20A were taken up before the Supreme Court yesterday, the government has therefore advised the EC to do so in the event the courts declare a referendum will be needed to bring about the latest amendment to the constitution.

A majority of legal experts have stated that a referendum must be held in addition to a two-thirds majority in parliament for certain amendments to the 20th Amendment to take effect.

Commenting on this, Minister of Justice Ali Sabri, President’s Counsel, has stated that if the Supreme Court decides that a referendum is required, the government will go for such a referendum immediately.
