Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging as a game-changing technology with the potential to revolutionize public services and fuel economic growth across the world. The UK government, under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, has unveiled an ambitious AI Opportunities Action Plan aimed at harnessing the power of AI to boost efficiency, create new job opportunities, and stimulate economic growth. This plan, which has secured a £14 billion commitment from leading tech firms, is expected to create over 13,000 new jobs in the UK.

While this plan is focused on the UK, it offers important lessons and potential opportunities for Sri Lanka as well. As AI transforms public services and industries, there are numerous job sectors where similar strategies could be applied in Sri Lanka to create new employment opportunities and boost economic development.

The UK’s AI strategy proposes a range of initiatives, including the creation of “AI Growth Zones” to drive infrastructure development, using AI to streamline administrative tasks in the public sector, and employing AI-powered cameras to inspect and repair roads, like fixing potholes. These technological advancements could also be mirrored in Sri Lanka, where AI can be harnessed to enhance infrastructure management, agricultural practices, healthcare systems, and education.

Here are some ways the AI-driven growth strategies in the UK could inspire job creation and development in Sri Lanka:

1. AI Data Scientists and Engineers
Similar to the growing demand for AI engineers in the UK, Sri Lanka could see a rise in job opportunities for skilled professionals in AI development, data science, and machine learning. These roles will be critical in building AI solutions for various industries, including healthcare, agriculture, and finance.

2. AI System Integrators
As Sri Lanka looks to integrate AI across industries, professionals with expertise in AI system integration will be in demand. These experts will play a key role in adapting AI technology to fit the needs of local businesses, public services, and infrastructure.

3. AI in Healthcare
Like the UK’s use of AI to diagnose medical conditions such as cancer more quickly, Sri Lanka can use AI in its healthcare sector to improve diagnostics and treatment, potentially leading to the creation of specialized medical roles focused on AI integration and support.

4. AI-Driven Infrastructure Management
The UK’s AI-powered road inspection system could be replicated in Sri Lanka to enhance the country’s infrastructure management. This will create job opportunities for AI technicians, system administrators, and professionals who monitor the AI’s performance.

5. AI in Education
AI has the potential to streamline administrative tasks in schools and universities, improving the efficiency of the education system. In Sri Lanka, this could lead to new roles in educational technology, including AI curriculum designers and tech support specialists who help teachers implement AI-powered tools.

6. AI in Agriculture
AI-driven agriculture, which has been successful in many countries, can revolutionize Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector by helping farmers optimize crop management, pest control, and irrigation. AI specialists and agricultural technicians would be essential in developing and maintaining these AI tools.

7. AI Support Roles
As AI becomes more integrated into Sri Lanka’s public and private sectors, there will be a growing need for professionals who can provide technical support and maintenance for AI systems. These jobs would range from system administrators to AI customer support specialists.

8. AI Trainers and Educators
With AI set to play an increasingly significant role in various industries, Sri Lanka will need trainers and educators who can teach AI skills to the workforce. This could lead to the creation of new teaching roles in AI, machine learning, and data science across universities and training centers.

9. AI Security Experts
Just as in the UK, where AI technology could be used to enhance public safety, Sri Lanka will need cybersecurity professionals who can safeguard AI systems and sensitive data from cyberattacks. AI security experts will be essential as more industries adopt AI solutions.

10. AI Research and Development (R&D)
Research into new AI technologies and applications will be a key area for job creation in Sri Lanka. R&D specialists will be needed to explore new AI-driven innovations in areas like healthcare, finance, and transportation, similar to the UK’s focus on supercomputers and increased computing power.

The UK’s AI strategy illustrates the broad potential of AI to drive job creation, economic development, and public service improvements. As Sri Lanka looks to adopt AI to modernize its industries, similar initiatives could be implemented to create a wide range of jobs that cater to both tech and non-tech sectors.

By embracing AI, Sri Lanka has the opportunity to harness a new wave of job opportunities that can improve the lives of working people, much like the UK’s vision of making AI work for everyone. Whether in healthcare, education, agriculture, or infrastructure, the possibilities for AI-driven job creation are vast and promising for Sri Lanka’s future workforce.

The lessons from the UK’s AI action plan are clear: AI is not just a tool for automation, but a catalyst for innovation and job growth. Sri Lanka’s ability to tap into this potential could determine its success in navigating the global AI revolution, providing better services to the public and creating new opportunities for its workforce.
