The school principal and two policemen held in remand custody for allegedly torturing several Grade Five students at Millaniya Primary School in Horana were today granted bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera ordered the suspects to be released on bail after taking into consideration a bail application filed on behalf of the suspects. Each suspect was ordered to be released on two sureties totaling one million rupees.
The National Child Protection Authority had arrested the suspects for subjecting nine students to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment over an incident relating to stealing money belonging to a school teacher. The National Child Protection Authority had informed the court that the suspects were arrested for causing injuries to the students by severely caning them at the school library and using electric shock treatment inside the police Jeep.
A further magisterial inquiry has been scheduled for January 18.
