A groundbreaking AI tax agent has been introduced in Sri Lanka by developer Bhanuka Harischandra to simplify tax filing for residents. Announced today on X, this innovative tool is available 24/7 on WhatsApp and is specifically trained on Sri Lankan tax laws.
The AI can answer a wide range of tax questions, calculate rates such as the 15% withholding tax on dividends, and guide users through filing their returns. Currently in its beta phase, it will soon process tax bills directly, send alerts about law changes—like the new 18% VAT on digital services effective October 1, 2025, as per Gazette No. 2443/30—and provide updates that outpace traditional advisors.
People can try it by messaging +94 (72) 447 0173, with Harischandra encouraging users to share feedback to refine the tool. This launch aligns with recent government mandates, including the requirement for all individuals over 18 to register for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) since January 1, 2024, aiming to boost tax compliance.
