President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has recommended Supreme Court Judge Preethi Padman Surasena for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, according to media reports.
Current Chief Justice Murdu Fernando is scheduled to retire on the 25th of this month, and the Constitutional Council is set to meet tomorrow (23rd) to decide on the new appointment.
Justice Surasena, a senior judge, has been recommended to become the 49th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka.
He previously served as President of the Court of Appeal before being appointed as a Supreme Court judge in January 2019 by former President Maithripala Sirisena. Earlier in his career, he served as a Senior State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Department, became a High Court Judge in 2007, and was appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2016.
