A gunshot was fired at the house of Attorney-at-Law Tharaka Nanayakkara, a member of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha representing the National People’s Power (NPP), early this morning.
The incident took place at around 4.45 a.m. when two unidentified individuals arrived on a motorcycle and fired at the gate of Nanayakkara’s residence in Udukawa, Weligama. Police protection had already been provided to the house due to previous death threats.
At the time of the shooting, Tharaka Nanayakkara was inside the house with his children. Police officers stationed at the premises returned fire at the suspects as they fled the scene. However, the gunmen escaped unharmed despite the exchange of gunfire.
No one was injured in the incident, but the gunfire caused damage to the gate. Police have identified and marked 10 locations where shots were fired.
The Matara Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit is conducting further investigations.
