The majestic wild tusker known as ‘Bhathiya’, who had been under round-the-clock veterinary care for multiple severe injuries, passed away early this morning despite desperate efforts by wildlife officers and veterinarians to save him.
Bhathiya, a much-loved elephant who roamed freely in the Nikaweratiya Wildlife Zone, was found in critical condition a few days ago after falling into an irrigation well in Polpithigama. The fall caused serious injuries and worsened complications from an older gunshot wound that had already weakened him.
On Monday, wildlife officers and a team of veterinarians carried out a difficult rescue operation. Using a backhoe and lifting equipment, they carefully hoisted the fallen tusker and turned him to the other side to ease his pain and prevent further damage while he lay partially submerged in water. Villagers and local wildlife officials stayed on site throughout the night to support the rescue mission.
Veterinary experts who examined Bhathiya revealed that the elephant had multiple gunshot wounds on his body, which had caused significant nerve damage. Dr. Ashoka Dangalla, who led the veterinary team, said yesterday that Bhathiya’s condition remained extremely critical despite intensive treatment with painkillers, antibiotics, and IV fluids.
“The gunshot wounds were very serious and had damaged nerves, leaving him partially immobile and in great pain. The fall into the well only made his suffering worse,” Dr. Dangalla explained. “We did everything we could, but unfortunately, he was too weak to survive.”
Bhathiya’s death has brought sadness to local communities and conservationists alike, as he had become an iconic figure in the region, admired by villagers and visitors who were often thrilled to spot him in the wild.
