Sources within the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) claim that influential elements within the government are attempting to take control of the century-old trade union, raising concerns that it could be reduced to a government-aligned body, dubbed the “JMOA.”
According to the GMOA’s constitution, elections are held annually. However, it is common practice to allow the current office-bearers to continue for an additional year without contest. Despite this tradition, a member of the GMOA told Lankasara that the current office-bearers, who reportedly enjoy special favor from the Health Minister, insist that elections be delayed by a year.
The member further revealed that the association is now split into two factions: one supporting the current leadership, and the other backing former office-bearers who have openly expressed their support for the government.
There is growing concern within the association that if leadership is handed over to those closely aligned with the Minister of Health, the GMOA’s longstanding reputation as a professional and independent body will be severely damaged.
It has also been reported that former senior officials, who wield significant influence, are strongly criticizing the current leadership for their perceived allegiance to the government.
