The Sri Lankan government has appointed a committee to review the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and submit recommendations.

The Ministry of Justice and National Integration announced that the committee has been appointed under the chairmanship of President’s Counsel Rienzi Arsakularatne.

A preliminary discussion on repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act was held recently, chaired by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.

The committee has now been formally appointed, and the Minister stated that repealing the existing Prevention of Terrorism Act is the policy of the current government.

Minister Harshana Nanayakkara emphasized that the new legislation should be capable of confronting global terrorism and related challenges while ensuring that it does not violate the human right to freedom of expression, as guaranteed by the internationally recognized Constitution of Sri Lanka.

The Minister further directed that the newly appointed committee must complete its work related to the repeal within a very short period.
