COLOMBO, SRI LANKA - APRIL 26: Police officers patrol the area around Dawatagaha Jumma Masjid ahead of Friday prayers on April 26, 2019 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Health Ministry revised the death toll from the deadly terror attacks on Easter Sunday to 253 after coordinated attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels in the Colombo area and eastern city of Batticaloa, injuring hundreds. Based on reports, six foreign police agencies and Interpol, including Scotland Yard from the UK and the FBI from the US, are currently assisting local police as the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks although there has been no public evidence of direct involvement. It was revealed in parliament this week that 15 Policemen have laid down their lives in the line of duty since 2015. This was revealed by the new Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Sarath Weerasekara in parliament recently. He was responding to a question posed by opposition MP Hesha Vithanage.

The Minister said steps have already been taken to provide the necessary welfare for the families of the cops who were killed while on duty. He said the majority of the deaths had occurred when attempting to apprehend suspects or during road traffic duties.
