Sri Lanka Climate Project cancelled , Sparking Protests and Job Loss Concerns
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has terminated multiple projects it deemed wasteful, including a climate adaptation initiative in Sri Lanka, triggering backlash from nationalist groups and environmental activists. The decision has also led to job losses, raising further criticism of the impact on Sri Lanka’s economy.

The Cancellation and Rising Criticism
In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), DOGE announced the cancellation of 199 projects across various government agencies, claiming it would save approximately $250 million. Among the terminated contracts, two were specifically highlighted:
A contract for “Asia Pacific – Sri Lanka climate change mitigation adaptation and resilience coordinator services for forest service”
A workshop on “Intercultural communication diversity dialogue circle communicating across differences”
Musk has previously criticized what he calls “climate alarmism”, arguing that government spending on climate change initiatives often lacks efficiency and tangible outcomes. However, in Sri Lanka, the cancellation has led to protests from nationalist groups who claim that foreign NGOs have too much influence over local policies and funding.
Impact on Sri Lanka’s Climate Initiatives and Economy
Sri Lanka, which faces severe climate risks such as rising sea levels and deforestation, has been depending on international support for climate adaptation efforts. The now-canceled project was aimed at enhancing forest resilience, implementing mitigation strategies, and supporting adaptation policies.
Environmental organizations have strongly criticized the move, warning that it could set back crucial conservation efforts. Additionally, the cancellation has resulted in significant job losses, particularly among those working in climate research, environmental NGOs, and community-based sustainability programs. Critics argue that the decision ignores the economic and environmental consequences for a vulnerable nation like Sri Lanka.
Nationalist Backlash and Protests Against NGOs
The termination of foreign-funded projects has fueled nationalist sentiment in Sri Lanka, with groups accusing NGOs of pushing external agendas under the guise of environmental aid. Protests have erupted in Colombo and other parts of the country, with demonstrators calling for stricter regulations on foreign-funded organizations and questioning the transparency of NGO activities. Some nationalist leaders argue that Sri Lanka should focus on self-sufficient, locally-driven climate solutions instead of relying on foreign interventions.
The Broader Controversy and Global Reactions
Musk’s decision has sparked a polarizing debate. Supporters of DOGE argue that cutting unnecessary expenditures is a step toward greater fiscal responsibility and reducing bureaucratic inefficiency. However, critics see it as an ideological move against climate action, disproportionately affecting developing nations that depend on international collaborations.
