Opposition MP Alleges Misuse of Luxury Vehicles by Ruling Party MPs
Opposition MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake alleged in Parliament today that two ruling party MPs are using luxury vehicles, despite government assurances that such facilities would not be permitted.
“One MP is seen transporting weeds in an estate,” Dassanayake claimed, waving a photograph as evidence. He further stated, “MP Wasantha Samarasinghe is using a Range Rover, and its maintenance cost is even higher than that of a V8.”
The remarks sparked heated arguments between MP Dassanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
Responding to the allegations, Prime Minister Amarasuriya clarified that the government has not provided vehicles to any ruling party MP, except for visually impaired MP Sugath Wasantha De Silva. She explained that this exception was made by the Presidential Secretariat to address a special need.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that there are no restrictions on MPs or Ministers using vehicles. She added that Ministers and Deputy Ministers have obtained vehicles through their respective Ministries.
The government has assured that it will investigate the claims raised by MP Dassanayake.
