Jaffna Police have launched an investigation following a complaint that MP Ramanathan Arjuna, an independent member of Parliament elected from the Jaffna District, allegedly stormed into the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and assaulted doctors and staff, misusing his parliamentary authority.
The complaint was filed yesterday (09) by P. Sathyamurthy, Director of Jaffna Teaching Hospital. According to the police, investigations are ongoing.
MP Ramanathan Arjuna, who is also a doctor, has faced similar accusations in the past. While serving as the Acting Director of the Chavakachcheri Hospital, he was reportedly involved in incidents that created significant tension at the facility. Multiple complaints were lodged against him, leading to a court summons.
Following that, he allegedly broke into Mannar Hospital at night and attempted to attack doctors and staff. These incidents resulted in further legal actions against him in the Mannar Court.
Controversies surrounding him extend to his parliamentary conduct. On his first day as an MP, he caused a commotion by occupying the Leader of the Opposition’s seat. Additionally, the Criminal Investigation Department recorded a statement from him over remarks allegedly supporting the LTTE organization.
In the latest incident, MP Arjuna is accused of threatening hospital security personnel and forcefully entering the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. He reportedly tried to assault several doctors and staff while shouting at and criticizing the hospital administration.
The case remains under investigation by the Jaffna Police.
