Plans to reclaim 45 hectares of land in the Bay of Galle have been approved, paving the way for infrastructure and real estate developments akin to Colombo Port City  The Sunday Times Newspaper reports. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) received the go-ahead after the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resources Management Department approved the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project.

The development aims to transform the Port of Galle into a cutting-edge tourism destination. Key features include real estate ventures, facilities for docking cruise ships, superyachts, and smaller boats, along with options for water sports and leisure activities. This initiative is expected to attract both local and international tourists.

According to the EIA report, the project will involve constructing two offshore breakwaters measuring 850 meters and 150 meters. These will help maintain calm waters in the bay and harbor. Additionally, a modern cruise terminal is planned as part of the development.
