Former State Minister and Kandy politician Lohan Ratwatte, currently serving a remand sentence, has been admitted to Colombo National Hospital, according to prison sources. The prison media spokesperson reported that Ratwatte suffers from respiratory distress, cirrhosis, and issues related to his lungs and pancreas. Based on a medical report from the prison hospital, Ratwatte was recommended to see a specialist for further investigation. Although he was scheduled for a consultation at Colombo National Hospital tomorrow (4th), prison authorities arranged for his admission today.
The prison media spokesperson stated that, given Ratwatte’s former role as Minister of Prisons, the Magistrate had included a note in the remand order requesting special security and medical care for him.
Ratwatte, who is currently in prison on theft-related charges, has been receiving inpatient medical treatment at the Prison Hospital since August 31, based on the recommendations of the prison doctor. He has also been provided with heightened security.
The former State Minister has been undergoing several medical evaluations and is scheduled to see a specialist visiting from Colombo National Hospital tomorrow. Following the specialist’s recommendations, a decision will be made regarding whether he should continue treatment in the Prison Hospital.
Ratwatte faces multiple charges, including using an illegally assembled vehicle with fake number plates, hiding the vehicle at his wife’s residence in Mirihana, and misleading the police with false statements regarding his secretary’s suicide in connection to the vehicle. He remains in custody until August 7th.
