Former Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara, who faced political challenges due to his involvement in controversial investigations, has been reappointed to the police on a contract basis. The Police Commission has approved his reappointment for one year, starting today (10).

Mr. Abeysekara was a key investigator in several high-profile cases in Sri Lanka. He also served as the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Some of the major cases under his supervision include the murder of rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, the abduction and disappearance of 11 youths in Colombo, the killing of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga, and the Rathupaswala shooting.

In addition to these cases, he was involved in investigations such as the Royal Park murder, the Angulana double murder, the Udadatalawinna murder, and the Mohammed Siam murder.

Shani Abeysekara was suspended during the Gotabaya Rajapaksa government and faced several charges, leading to his imprisonment.
