Kandy District’s senior politician, Lakshman Kiriella, has announced his decision to retire from parliamentary politics, allowing space for younger individuals to enter the political arena. He intends to introduce his daughter, Chamindrani Kiriella, as a candidate for the upcoming general elections from the Kandy District, according to sources.
Responding to a media inquiry in Kandy today, Kiriella stated that after 36 years in parliament, it is time to step aside and give the youth a chance. When asked if there was a young person in his family interested in politics, he smiled and said, “You may find out tomorrow.”
Kiriella also clarified that he will not be contesting the elections this year and has no desire to return to parliament through the national list. Instead, he wishes to rest and relax at home.
His daughter, Chamindrani, has been following in his footsteps, serving as his coordinating secretary. A past pupil of Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy, is also an Attorney-at-Law.
