Director General of the Bribery Commission, Kanishka Wijeratne, has resigned. President’s Counsel Uditha Igalahewa informed the Supreme Court of this decision today.
The President’s lawyer, representing the Director General, announced that Wijeratne submitted her resignation letter to the President. She made this decision because she wishes to return to the judiciary.
The resignation comes after a fundamental rights petition was filed against her appointment by journalist Ruwani Fonseka and Transparency International Sri Lanka. They argued that the appointment was unconstitutional and unlawful. The petitioners requested that she be removed from office.
The case was heard by a three-judge panel consisting of Justices Prithi Padman Surasena, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, and Janak de Silva.
