The Supreme Court yesterday (09) ordered that the confidential report submitted by the police team of the Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority regarding the threats to the life of former director of the Criminal Investigation Department, retired Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera, should be submitted to the court on the 29th of August.

This order was issued when the fundamental rights petition filed by retired Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera, (former director of the Criminal Investigation Department) was called before the court yesterday (9) to increase security as there is a conspiracy to kill him.

Shani Abeysekera had filed this petition, asking for an order to strengthen the  currently provided security, as there is a plan to assassinate him in a car accident.

Deshabandu Tennakoon, National Police Commission and Defense Secretary, Attorney General and others were named as respondents in these petitions.

When the petition was called today, the President’s counsel Upul Jayasuriya, who appeared for the petitioner, Shani Abeysekera, was testifying before the court, and it had been stated in a report submitted by the police team of the Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority that they had received information that there is a plan to assassinate his client in a car accident.

Accordingly, the President’s counsel said that the security currently given to him is not sufficient.

The government lawyer who appeared for the Attorney General informed the court that the two police officers have been deployed for security at his house and four more officers have been deployed for travel purposes.

The government lawyer said that all these six officers are well armed.

At that time, the President’s counsel, Mr. Upul Jayasuriya said that this protection is not sufficient according to the nature of the threats against his client.

The president’s lawyer said that although a police motorcycle was given to security for his travel, but it is not enough to prevent an accident.

After that, it was ordered to call on the 29th to consider the petition.

The supreme court ordered the Attorney General to submit the confidential report submitted by the police team of the Victims and Witnesses Protection Authority regarding the threats to the petitioner Shani Abeysekera to the court on the next day.
