There is democratic space for dissension, but we would not allow disruption of the march forward says the President

President Ranil Wickremesinghe warned the opposition in Parliament today that, though he accepts the right to dissent, express opposition, and protest peacefully, nobody would be allowed to disrupt the government’s program through agitations. In such a scenario, he said, the government would take stringent action.

The president stated this after making a long explanation regarding the country’s economy in Parliament.

While thanking the police and armed forces, the president said that if this country had collapsed on July 9, 2020, the country would not be in this condition today.

The president said that today there is fuel oil and electricity due to the measures taken by the armed forces and the police.

The president said that a presidential election or a general election could be held around next June after the economy stabilizes while hinting that the local government election would not be held. But he invited the opposition to come together to rebuild the country under a common program.

 

The president said that he has completed the final phase of the complex deal with the International Monetary Fund and said that the government has fulfilled its duty in this regard and could not have continued without taking this step. He also offered an apology to the people who had to endure a difficult period in life.

 

“After the IMF agreement is reached, a proposal will be brought before Parliament for accept it. Otherwise, you are free to propose an alternative. Thereafter we could devise long-, medium-, and short-term programs and move forward.” The president said
