Jaswar Umar Elected President of Sri Lanka Football Federation

Jaswar Umar has been elected as the President of the Sri Lanka Football Federation. Umar secured 45 out of 67 votes, while his opponent Dakshitha Sumathipala received only 20 votes.

However, Umar’s election is not without controversy. He has faced allegations of embezzling FIFA funds and was previously convicted and recommended as unfit for administrative roles by the sports corruption investigation police unit of the Ministry of Sports.

Umar has a history of involvement in football administration, including serving as president and secretary. Despite receiving significant financial assistance from FIFA for the development of the sport, Sri Lankan football currently ranks 207th out of 211 countries in the FIFA world rankings, with only four countries below it. The women’s team fares slightly better, ranked 153rd.
