Sri Lanka had previously concluded their first innings with 439 runs, featuring centuries from Dinesh Chandimal (107 runs) and Angelo Mathews (147 runs). Despite these strong performances, Sri Lanka faced challenges as five players, including Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva, failed to score more than 10 runs.

By the end of the third day, Afghanistan was 199 for one wicket, trailing by 240 runs in the first innings. The Sri Lankan bowlers faced fatigue, and the pitch, described as a dead pitch with no help for bowlers, posed challenges. However, promising spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya showcased bounce and spin in the few overs bowled.

As the match heads into the fourth day, the Afghanistan team’s remarkable performance has shifted the dynamics, setting the stage for a crucial deciding period in the first half of the day. If the pitch undergoes any transformations, the challenge for the Sri Lankan team could intensify. The third day belongs to Afghanistan, and the upcoming sessions will play a pivotal role in determining the match’s outcome.
