New endemic horned lizard species discovered in Sri Lanka

A group of researchers led by Environmental scientist and herpetologist Sameera Suranjana Karunarathna has discovered a new species of endemic horned lizard species in Sri Lanka. Currently, Sri Lanka has five Ceretophora type of horned lizards species. The new species found in the Kegalle, Salgala forest has increased this number to six. 

The new species has been named as ‘Ceratophora Ukuwelai’ in honor of Dr. Kanishka Ukuwela, Evolutionary Biologist and Amphibian Biologist of the University of Rajarata, for his outstanding contribution to the conservation and study of animals in Sri Lanka.
