He said that it was only during the governance of Sirimavo Bandaranaike that Sri Lanka was able to alleviate some of the corruption that had plagued the country under various governments for seventy-two years after independence.

Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera alleged that the present government was relentlessly destroying forests and that the people of the country were being seriously misled by the so-called development being done by flouting laws.

He said that the country’s rivers, lakes, springs and forest resources have been gifted to the present generation for their benefit by our forefathers. However, the Thero said it would not be long before the corrupt politicians who destroy such resources for monetary gain are forever rejected by the people.

He said the politicians and their families have been enriching themselves for seventy-two years, claiming that the country was developing and that it was unfortunate that Sri Lanka continues to still be developing country of the Third World.
