The SLPP will oppose the 22nd amendment if it allows the full implementation of the 13th amendment to the Constitution.

Moves are underway within government circles to oppose the 22nd amendment to the constitution.

Highly placed government sources said that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had allegedly informed the SLPP members to oppose the 22nd amendment since it would pave the way for the full implementation of the provisions of the 13th amendment through the implementation of the 22nd amendment.

In view of this move, a group of MPs have recently requested the President, Ranil Wickramasinghe, to immediately stop the full implementation of the 13th Amendment through the 22nd Constitutional Amendment.

It is reported to Lankasara that the MPs have explained the matter at length to the President that the implementation of the 13th amendment in favour of the Tamil diaspora may have an adverse impact on the country.

However, internal sources say that the SLPP MPs have informed the president that if there are moves to implement the 13th amendment to the constitution through the provisions contained in the 22nd amendment, they would not support it.
