The fate of the 22nd amendment in the balance!

 

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has assured the government parliamentarians that Parliament will not be dissolved before the appointed time.

The President was responding to a query by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Member of Parliament Mahindananda Aluthgamage at the group meeting on whether Parliament would be dissolved after two and a half years.

The ruling party MPs group met yesterday (17) at the President’s Office under the chairmanship of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

In the meantime, the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Member of Parliament Sagara Kariyawasam, has stated that the majority of the SLPP members are against the twenty-second amendment.

Therefore, he has said that the introduction of the twenty-second amendment to the constitution will not receive the support of all the members of the SLPP.

The Justice and Prison Reforms Minister, Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, has emphasised that the twenty-second amendment is the need of the hour and appealed to the members to extend their unstinted cooperation to introduce the piece of legislation.
