Sri Lanka was elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) by the UN General Assembly. The newly elected members will serve a term from 2025 to 2027. Sri Lanka last served on ECOSOC during 2006-2008, and the new term will begin on 1st January 2025.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, responsible for coordinating the economic and social fields of the organization. It has 54 members, who are elected yearly by the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms. The Council holds one four-week session each year in July and an annual meeting in April with finance ministers of key committees of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
