Sri Lankan medical researchers warn that there is a risk of emerging new strains from rapidly spreading Alpha ( B 117) variant in the country.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director, Institute of Allergy and Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura points out that genetic research is being carried out on the new variants of Covid and that these tests do not completely identify the new variants of Covid that are spreading in the country.

He points out that because the samples received by his laboratory are so limited, he can only research the sample and test new strains, but his laboratory is not capable of testing samples from infected people across the country.
He said out of 96 samples, only 85 were suitable for the test.
